Israel Zangwill (1864–1926) was a British author, playwright, and social activist who became an emblematic figure in the cultural landscape of his time. He was born on February 14, 1864, in London, to a family of Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. Zangwill’s literary career was prolific and diverse, with works ranging from novels, plays, and short stories to political essays and satire. His keen insight into the Jewish experience in Europe is showcased in works such as ‘Children of the Ghetto’ (1892) and ‘Dreamers of the Ghetto’ (1898), which reflect his empathetic handling of complex cultural identities. Zangwill is also renowned for the term ‘melting pot, ‘ derived from his play ‘The Melting Pot’ (1908), symbolizing the fusion of diverse ethnicities in America.
