‘The Rescure: A Romance of the Shallows’ is a novel by Joseph Conrad, published for the first time in 1920. The work, however, was completed with great difficulty: Conrad, in fact, began working on the novel in the spring of 1896, but soon abandoned the project, and then resumed it the following year. But even in 1897 the work was shelved by the writer. It was not until 1919 that the novel was completed and, in 1920, it was published after being submitted by Joseph Conrad to one last revision.The novel concludes the ‘Lingard trilogy’, a series of novels based on Conrad’s adventurous experiences aboard the Vidar ship.The small brig, armed with 8-inch Lightning guns carrying Captain Tom Lingard, the first Shaw officer and a Malaysian crew, stands in front of Carimata still, suspended on a calm sea without a breath of wind, when late night is approached by a small wooden boat.
