His magnum opus, ‘Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ’ (1880), overshadowed his other works, becoming one of the best-selling novels of the 19th century, praised for its vivid description and emotional depth. Besides ‘Ben-Hur’, his notable works include ‘The Fair God’ (1873), which portrays the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, and ‘The Prince of India; or, Why Constantinople Fell’ (1893), which explores the fall of Byzantium.
