This anthology is a catalog of seeds—the work of a network of young writers and mentors, each cultivating a shimmering, emergent voice. For the past two years, New York City high school students have weathered an adolescence shaped by an ongoing global pandemic. Throughout it all, they have found new ways to build community and take root. Roots allow for living beings to journey into our past and forward into the future, toward and away from home, and enable us to withstand the storms that invariably pass through. In short stories, personal essays, poetry, and more, the students reflect on endurance, change, and growth.

Madeline Mc Intosh is the CEO of Penguin Random House U.S. She has worked in publishing for almost three decades, and in that time has held positions in publishing, sales, operations, and audio, and was a pioneer in the early development of online sales and in the digital transition. Mc Intosh is a Girls Write Now honoree.
Allison Russell is a three-time Grammy-nominated musician and songwriter for Outside Child; author of a forthcoming memoir with Flatiron Books; and an anti-bigotry activist and Girls Write Now honoree.
Morayo Faleyimu is a writer of short and long-form fiction. She works as a Professional Development Writer for Uncommon Schools. Faleyimu is also a Girls Write Now mentor alumna and a co-chair of the Girls Write Now Anthology Committee.
