Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890 1937) was an American writer who achieved posthumous fame through his influential works of horror fiction. He was virtually unknown and published only in pulp magazines before he died in poverty, but he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors in his genre.

Robert W. Chambers(1865-1933), an American artist, short story writer, and novelist, is best remembered for his strange, often paranormal short stories. Although Chambers often wrote in other genres, including romance and historical fiction, his spooky stories are noted as his most original and trailblazing contributions to fiction.

Many people regard M. R. James (1862-1936) as the finest writer of ghost stories in the English language. Though James’s work as a medievalist and scholar is still highly regarded, he is best remembered for his ghost stories, which some regard as among the best in the genre. James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James’s protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the ‘antiquarian ghost story’.
