After Wang Tong”s death, in order to commemorate him and promote his academic thoughts, his disciples compiled Zhong Shuo imitating The Analects written by Confucius” disciples. Zhong Shuo is also called Wen Zhong Zi Shuo. The book is divided into ten chapters: Wangdao, Heaven and Earth, Shijun, Zhougong, Wenyi, Liyue, History, Weixiang, Liming, and Guanlang. The Narrative says: "The teaching of the child in the text follows the way of the king, so the Wang Dao is the first. The ancient saint king, the two rituals must be in accordance with the virtues of the ancient sage, so the Heaven and Earth is the second.Earth is inferior to heaven, and the emperor and his ministers are the same, so the Shijun is the next one. Serving the monarch, must learn from Zhougong, so the Zhougong is the next one. Zhou Gong”s work all came from Yi, so the Wenyi was the next one. Yi is the source of education. Education comes from ritual and music, so the Liyue is the next one. Liyue comes from history, so History is the next one. In the process of establishing the system, Wei Xiang contributed the most, so Weixiang is the next. Exhaustive research on reason is in fate, so Liming is the next one. For those who talk about life, Yi is very profound, so the next is Guanlang. The ten articles are all centered on the title of the article, in the form of lectures, as well as questions and answers with the disciples, scholars, and people of the time, recording and preserving the main words, deeds and thoughts of Wang Tong. It is an important document for later generations to study Wang Tong”s thought and the development of thought between the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Zhong Shuo has the earliest notes of Ruan Yi and Gong Dingchen in the Northern Song Dynasty. Chen Liang reedited the book in the Southern Song Dynasty. Ruan Yi”s notes have been passed down to this day, but Gong Dingchen”s and Chen Liang”s works have been lost. The three-complete version of Zhong Shuo absorbs the achievements of the predecessors, and makes full reference to various original texts in the process of annotation and translation in order to have a more accurate grasp of the meaning of the text. It is based on literal translation, supplemented by free translation, and strives to be clear and elegant in writing.
