This 1899 collection includes the eponymous ‘A Paladin of Philanthropy, ‘ about the eccentric figure of Sir James Oglethorpe (1696-1785), British general and MP, philanthropist, social reformer, and founder of the colony of Georgia. Also included are pieces on Oliver Goldsmith’s poems and plays, John Gay, and Boswell’s literary predecessors.

Henry Austin Dobson (1840–1921), known as Austin Dobson, was a distinguished English poet and essayist.  He published his first collection of poems, Vignettes in Rhyme, in 1873. In addition to poetry, he also wrote a number of biographies, including studies of Henry Fielding, Richard Steele, Fanny Burney, Oliver Goldsmith, and Horace Walpole.
