Lawrence’s novel, set in England and the Tyrolean Alps in the years before World War I, examines the sisters’ romantic relationships with Gerald Crich and Rupert Birkin, and also the relationship between the two men who share a strong physical and psychological attraction to each other. Considered to be Lawrence’s masterpiece, the principal characters are drawn from Lawrence and his wife and the writer Katherine Mansfield and her husband John Middleton Murry.
