Charalampos (Babis) GIOUSMPASOGLOU (BSc, MSc, MA, Pg D, Ph D): Babis has a dual background, both as a practitioner and academic; he has worked for 20 years as senior manager and GM in the Greek luxury hospitality industry. As an academic, he worked in Greece, Bahrain and the UK in undergraduate and postgraduate hospitality and business administration related programmes. His research interests focus on Managerial work, Hospitality Management, Culture, Human Resources Management/OB and Brain Drain. On these research themes he has published a book, book chapters, journal articles and presented papers to national and international congresses. Babis is a Senior Fellow member of the Higher Education Academy (UK). He is also a reviewer in reputable academic journals such as the ‘International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management’ (IJCHM). This book offers a collection of chapters on key consequences, challenges and strategies in the new economic environment that was shaped after the 2008 economic crisis in southern Europe (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus) and Ireland in higher education (HE). The content covers issues such as the loss of human capital and competitiveness in HE institutes at the national level, the collapse of research and innovation, the brain gain on behalf of the receiving countries, and the need for new national and EU policies regarding the migration/loss of highly qualified staff. This book aims to be an international platform to bring together academics, researchers, lecturers, decision makers, policy makers, and practitioners to share new theories, research findings, and case studies; to enhance understanding and collaboration in issues related to the brain drain/brain gain phenomena within the EU from a higher education management perspective. The book also focuses on the mistakes and misjudgements regarding the real dimensions of the problem on the national and European (EU) levels. The motivation behind writing this book stems from the fact that there is a paucity of research in the field. Thus, this book provides a single reference for brain drain in HE for the Southern European countries and Ireland. Readers will find up-to-date and well researched information related to the effects of the brain drain phenomenon. The book covers the most important and common issues concerning this current and topical area of research as well as the current trends and future developments, such as the impact of Brexit in the European HE system.Target Audience:Professors in academia, deans, heads of departments, director of masters, faculty staff, students (undergraduate and postgraduate level), politicians, public sector senior managers and administrators, policy makers, corporate heads of firms, senior general managers, managing directors, information technology directors and managers, libraries, etc.
