‘The Soul of Man under Socialism’ by Oscar Wilde is an essay that perfectly encapsulates the famous writer’s ideals. A critique on capitalism and how charity functioned as a sort of prison in a capitalist society, Wilde takes the opportunity to describe a libertarian world that leaves people freer to change their economic situations and better their lives in a way that the current society doesn’t allow. Though written in 1891, capitalism is still up for debate today, thus the story may be over a century old, but it’s still very relevant.
