Lucius Shepard gehörte zu den schillerndsten Figuren der amerikanischen Science Fiction: Bereits beim Geburtsjahr ist nicht geklärt, ob er 1943 oder ‘47 in Virginia zur Welt kam. Einen großen Teil seiner Jugend verbachte er auf Reisen durch Mittelamerika, Asien, Nordafrika und Europa, auf denen er sich mit ganz unterschiedlichen Jobs über Wasser hielt. Der Fokus seiner ersten Romane, die nahe am Cyberpunk sind, liegt auf Mittelamerika. In den 1970er Jahren, nach einem Studium an der Universität von North Carolina, wurde Shepard Musiker und erlebte die Ära des Rock’n‘Roll hautnah mit. Seine Romane sind mehrfach ausgezeichnet, für „Das Leben im Krieg“ gewann er 1990 den Kurd-Laßwitz-Preis. Lucius Shepard starb im März 2014.
