Defoe was a prolific writer, publishing over 300 works of literature to his name and widely thought of as a prominent figure in various social and political circles during his time. His opinions were never received with immediate certainty as Defoe spent a significant amount of time in jail for writing many pieces of political propaganda. A Journal of the Plague Year was widely debated on its merit as a fictional novel. Editors primarily believed it to be a work of non-fiction, portraying society’s lived experience in London circa 1665 through the perspective of Daniel Defoe’s uncle, Henry Defoe. It was eventually published as a true work of historical fiction. Daniel Defoe was thought of to have lived dangerously, always on the run from creditors as he had accumulated a substantial amount of debt.
