He was a native of Wilmington, Delaware, and he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. Throughout his prolific career, Pyle authored over 50 books and illustrated hundreds of works for other authors, distinguishing himself with his unique style in both the visual and literary arts. His impact on illustration was so profound that he is often referred to as the ‘Father of American Illustration’. As a writer, Pyle is best known for his contributions to the genre of children’s literature, where he skillfully blended elements of fantasy and history. His seminal works include ‘The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood’ and ‘King Arthur and His Knights’.
