Hoes van John Buchan: The Battle of the Somme, First Phase (Barnes & Noble Digital Library) (ePUB)

Trench warfare comes to vivid life in this 1916 blow-by-blow account of one of history’s bloodiest battles, written for the British War Propaganda Bureau. Although leaving out the great number of casualties, Buchan includes incredible detail of the battle, including letters that place the reader on the front.
