Lao She 
Father and Son Surnamed Ma 

Father and Son Surnamed Ma is an early work of Lao She, written in England in 1929. The novel portrays a superstitious, modest, sloppy, and lazy slave-like character, Lao Ma. His life creed is to live by life, which is reminiscent of Ah Q in Lu Xun”s works. The difference is that Ah Q lives in the countryside of old China, while Lao Ma is an overseas Chinese who lives abroad. Lao She deliberately placed Lao Ma in an exotic setting. Through the life of Ma”s father and son in London and their contacts with the British, we can see the differences between the Eastern and Western nations, and try to highlight the absurdity of backward nationality in the context of the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures.
