The novel begins with Wu Youbin’s promotion. This "old" policeman, who once laboured in village as educated youth, later became a soldier, a policeman responsible for civil cases and the criminal policeman, and then working in the bureau responsible for logistics, altogether more than 20 years of police service. He finally got a place pair place when he was over 50 years old, although the "Comprehensive Case Handling Center over the Years" was only a temporary supernumerary department. This department is responsible for sorting out the unsolved case records, filing the files which should be filed, and closing the case that should be closed. If any hidden information or clues are found, it could be handle as appropriate. Yu, the director of the logistics support department, is also the director of this division. Besides Wu Youbin, the deputy director, there are only two police officers in the center: Ai Jing, a liberal arts graduate, and Lu Xiaofei, who was demoted for making mistakes. There are so many records that they couldn’t read all of them in three to five years. In such a big city, every day, there are big and small cases. Every time a case is reported, the police will write it down for future reference. There are false reports and true reports. Some cases have been solved, closed, others have not been solved, hanging. There are more false cases, nothing at all, or just trivial matters. In these cumbersome records, Ai Jing sorted out a special category, that is, missing cases. There are several unresolved situations: First, the missing person appears, and it’s okay; Second, the missing person never appeared again, and the family members gave up the search. The case file is only a few thin pages, and there may be a life behind it. Three police officers from the center started with the disappearance of the wife of the ship owner who died in a collision of two ships a few years ago, successfully solved the mystery, and then went into a disappearance case 20 years ago. With the progress of the investigation, the truth gradually emerged, and the parties in this case were actually around.
