Charles Covell examines the law of nations encountered in the work of major political thinkers from Vitoria to Hegel. He explains how these thinkers contributed to the current theories of natural law and just war and how they played a key role in the elaboration of the principles which are central to the modern system of the law of nations.

CHARLES COVELL was educated at the City of London School and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Since 1990, he has taught law and politics at the University of Tsukuba in Japan. His publications includeKant and the Law of Peace: A Study in the Philosophy of International Law and International Relations (1998) and
Hobbes, Realism and the Tradition of International Law (2004).
