Meanwhile, his sister must take a job in a milliner’s studio and is occasionally pressed into service by their uncle who exploits her good looks. The novel is satirical and humorous in tone and its success with readers established Dickens’ literary reputation.

He is widely considered the greatest Victorian novelist, having written such classics as Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol, and Oliver Twist.
