He was part of the Confederation Poets, a group that played a key role in the development of Canadian poetry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Roberts attended the University of New Brunswick, where he nurtured his literary talents, penning both poetry and prose with a particular interest in the natural world and Canadian wilderness.
