Emerson Hough (1857–1923) was an American author best known for his contributions to Western fiction and historical narratives. Born in Newton, Iowa, Hough graduated from the University of Iowa in 1880 and later studied law, but his passion lay in writing, especially encapsulated by the spirit of the American frontier. After moving to White Oaks, New Mexico, to practice law, he became more acquainted with the Wild West, which significantly influenced his literary career. Hough wrote for various periodicals before publishing his first novel, ‘The Mississippi Bubble, ‘ in 1902, which adeptly combined historical fact with fiction, a characteristic feature of his writing style. However, it was ‘The Covered Wagon’ (1922), a vivid portrayal of pioneer life, that became his most celebrated work, offering readers a meticulous depiction of westward expansion and frontier life.
