Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was an influential English writer and a central figure in the modernist literary movement of the early 20th century. Her narrative style is noted for its lyrical prose, exploration of consciousness, and use of stream of consciousness. Born into an intellectual household, Woolf was a pioneer in the use of indirect speech and inner monologue, greatly contributing to the development of the novel as a form.
