Raphael Sabatini (1875–1950) was an Italian-English writer known for his historical fiction, which was characterized by its swashbuckling adventure, romance, and smartly plotted action. Born to an English mother and Italian father in the town of Jesi, Italy, Sabatini”s cosmopolitan upbringing and mastery of several languages would later inform the vivid and authentic settings of his novels. Educated in Portugal and Switzerland, Sabatini started his career as a linguist and translator before turning to writing full-time. His breakthrough came with “Scaramouche” (1921), a novel set during the French Revolution, followed by “Captain Blood” (1922), which established him as one of the leading adventure writers of his day. “The Justice of the Duke” is among his lesser-known works but none the less reflects the intricate plotting and historical detail that permeates Sabatini”s oeuvre. His works have been praised for their intelligent narrative and the sophisticated manner in which they weave historical fact with fiction, making Sabatini a beloved figure among both critics and readers of the historical adventure genre. Although many of his contemporaries have faded from public memory, Sabatini”s work remains in print and continues to be discovered by new generations of readers who are taken in by the bravado and eloquence of his storytelling.
