The Underground City is a story by Jules Verne concerning the fortunes of Aberfoyle, a mining village near Stirling, Scotland. After receiving a letter from an old acquaintance, miner James Starr sets off for the Aberfoyle mine. Despite the fact that the mine was thought to have been mined out a decade ago, James Starr discovers a mine overman, Simon Ford, and his family living deep within the mine. The protagonists must contend with unusual and incomprehensible phenomena in and around the mine after Simon Ford discovers a big vein of coal.
