  • This edition includes the following editor’s introduction: Willa Cather, an analysis of the literature of a free and empowered woman

First published in 1918, ‘My Ántonia’ is a novel by American writer Willa Cather and is considered one of her best works.

Set in the Midwestern Nebraska frontier in the late 19th century, ‘My Ántonia’ tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia and the novel’s American-born narrator, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions on both children, affecting them for life. The story is told as Jim relates his own image of Ántonia in a nostalgic re-creation of his childhood and youth.

This portrait of Ántonia is widely acknowledged as one of the most memorable characters in twentieth-century literature. Through her, Cather celebrates the vitality and fruitfulness of the pioneering era as a type of lost paradise. “My Ántonia” is widely considered the best of the author’s novels which reflect her childhood experiences growing up on the plains. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. Since its appearance, Cather’s carefully crafted fiction has gathered a steady following. Her reputation has continued to grow since her death in 1947.

“My Ántonia” is a deep and insightful read that is well worth the time invested.
