Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy 

In 1919, Mr. Hu Shi’s Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy (Volume 1) was published, which was republished within two months and reprinted 13 times within two years. This book has a great influence to the academy, even the culture field. Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy is revised and expanded by Mr. Hu Shi on the basis of his doctoral thesis The History of the Famous Schools of the Pre-Qin Period and later lecture notes on the history of Chinese philosophy at Peking University. Hu Shi inherited sinologists’ methods and achievements in philosophy, and used western philosophical methods to connect the study of classics and history before the Qin dynasty into a coherent academic system. According to the sequence of times and the evolution of thoughts, the book conducts textual research, analysis and research on each school of philosophy, and explains its origins and influences on later generations. This makes philosophy history no longer block records, but a history of philosophy with its own internal logic. Mr. Yu Yingshi believes that this book has a "creative and revolutionary" significance to the history of modern Chinese academic thought. This book is a "new model" that marks the transition of Chinese traditional learning to modern learning.
