‘The Prophet’s Mantle’ by Hubert Bland and E. Nesbit is, at its core, a comment on society with some fascinating insight into late Victorian socialism and working conditions. Socialism as an alternative to the social hierarchy is weaved throughout the book as it’s discussed that, not only do those at the bottom of the social ladder suffer, but even those at the top are often unable to live the tranquil lives they’d hoped.
