Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) was an influential American writer, poet, and art collector, known for her experiments with language and her central role in the Parisian avant-garde. Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, and raised in Oakland, California, Stein moved to Paris in 1903, where she would reside for the majority of her life, hosting a salon that attracted many famous artists and writers of the time, including Picasso, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald. She is best remembered for her innovative literary style characterized by its stream of consciousness technique and repetitive phrasing, which sought to capture the ‘continuous present’—a concept she was fascinated with. Stein’s literary contributions extend beyond narrative; she was also a prolific playwright and poet, with works such as ‘Tender Buttons’ appraised for the same idiosyncratic manipulation of language. However, her novel ‘Three Lives’ (1909) is especially significant as a forerunner to her later, more abstract writings. The book consists of three independent stories that delve into the lives of three women, interweaving themes of identity and the human condition in the everyday. Stein’s radical syntactical experiments have placed her among the foremothers of modernist literature. Her extensive oeuvre and the intellectual hub she created in her Paris salon had a profound influence on the development of 20th-century art and literature.
