Nací en San Antonio Matute, Jalisco, México. Perdí a mi padre a los siete años y a los doce vine a los Estados Unidos de América con la intención de trabajar, pero el destino quiso que continuara mi educación interrumpida en México a causa de la situación financiera de mi familia. Tuve la fortuna de estudiar en la Universidad de San Diego y me gradué con el bachillerato en artes liberales y recibí mi credencial de maestro de primaria. Más tarde, estudié y recibí mi maestría en educación bilingüe.
Mucho más tarde, mientras daba instrucción en quinto grado en la Escuela Phil D. Swing de Brawley, California, tomé un curso en literatura para niños, durante el cual escribí cuatro cuentos para niños. Uno de estos cuentos es “A Boy Becomes a Man” (Madurez temprana de un niño).
