Sherlock Holmes, the most famous detective of all time, genius with outstanding powers of observation, and his friend Dr. Watson solve every case, no matter how difficult it may be. The first volume in the series about the adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains a collection of twelve short stories, including The Red-Headed League, The Five Orange Pips, The Adventure Of The Speckled Band, The Adventure Of The Blue Carbuncle and The Adventure Of The Beryl Coronet.

Arthur Conan Doyle wurde am 22. Mai 1859 in Edinburgh/Schottland geboren und starb am 7. Juli 1930 in Crowborough/Sussex. Er entstammte einer aristokratischen irischen Familie. Nach einem Studium der Medizin an der Universität Edinburgh erwarb er 1885 den Doktortitel. Bereits während des Studium hatte er mit dem Schreiben begonnen, um seinen Lebensunterhalt zu finanzieren. Die Praxis, die er anschließend in Southsea/Portsmouth eröffnete, lief nicht gut, so dass er seine schriftstellerische Tätigkeit fortsetzt. Im Jahr 1887 erschien seine erste Geschichte um den Detektiv Sherlock Holmes und dessen Freund Dr. Watson, der ihm zu Weltruhm verhelfen sollte, „Eine Studie in Scarlett“.
