Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810–1865), often referred to as Mrs. Gaskell, was a renowned British Victorian novelist and short story writer, notable for her detailed and perceptive portraits of Victorian society. The daughter of a Unitarian minister, her upbringing and early experiences in rural Knutsford and later in the industrial city of Manchester significantly influenced her writing. She married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister, and her experiences within this community, as well as her observations of the stark discrepancies between the affluent and the impoverished, informed her literary endeavors.
