Hugh Lofting (1886-1947) was an English author best known for creating the classic children’s series ‘Doctor Dolittle.’ Born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, he was educated at Mount St Mary’s College in Sheffield, and later studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States. Lofting’s literary career was inadvertently sparked by his desire to entertain his children through letters while serving in the trenches during World War I, where he was reluctant to expose them to the realities of war.
