Published in 1847, Hawbuck Grange follows the adventures of Thomas Scott, Esq., an avid sportsman. The novel includes one of Surtees’s most memorable passages: an exhilarating account of a hare hunt.

Robert Smith Surtees (1805–1864) was an English novelist and editor. His humorous pieces first appeared in New Sporting Magazine, which he helped found. These pieces were later published as Jorrocks’ Jaunts and Jollities and were so popular that Surtees published several more Jorricks novels, among other works.
