After a brief stint at the University of Michigan, Ware joined the Union Army during the Civil War and rose to the rank of Captain. His experiences significantly informed his later writings. After the war, he studied law and moved to Fort Scott, Kansas, where he began his practice. A man of diverse talents, Ware also engaged in politics and served on the Kansas Supreme Court. In his literary works, Ware typically employed a detailed and narrative-driven style, rich with personal observations and historical rigor.
