A bridge should be built on the broad Loire River to facilitate citizens to travel between the two sides of the river. The devil volunteered, saying that he could repair a bridge in one night without taking any money. He only wanted the soul of the first person who walked across the bridge. The mayor promised without hesitation. Is he really willing to sacrifice an innocent people? He influenced many great writers of later generations, including Beckett and Thomas Pynchon, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
