Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) was an American short-story writer, journalist, and critic.  He is known for his collection, Write it Right and a volume of ironic definitions, The Devil’s Dictionary.  Disillusioned with American life, he moved to Mexico in 1913, where he vanished without a trace.
