Bennett’s major literary contribution is the ‘Five Towns’ series, an affectionate and incisive chronicle of life in the Pottery manufactures of North Staffordshire, which he termed the ‘Five Towns’, inspired by the six towns that eventually became Stoke-on-Trent. Bennett’s intricate depiction of the ambitions and daily struggles of middle-class provincial life is apparent in titles such as ‘Anna of the Five Towns’ (1902), ‘The Old Wives’ Tale’ (1908), and ‘Clayhanger’ (1910). His work is characterised by a meticulous attention to detail and a certain tenderness towards his characters, framed within the social context of the Edwardian era.
