About the author

Bill lived most of his life on the west coast of California. He was born in Spring Valley in the foothills east of San Diego. The spring, the valley was named for, ran clear all year long and flowed into a creek right in front of his grandmother’s big two-story farmhouse where he lived with his parents. He played in that creek, caught crawdads, pollywogs, frogs, and minnows, and cooled his feet in the hot summers.
Growing up on the edge of desert, the clear sky over our part of southern California became a prominent part of his daily experience. A real mind blower for the 15-year old boy was the vision of the comet Arend-Roland that dominated the western sky over many evenings. It spread from above the horizon up to the top of the sky. Astronomy became his hobby.
Bill explored county hiking trails, rabbit trails, even very narrow little bug trails that snuck through the grass and roots of the chaparral.
He went to San Diego State College, majored in Math, and studied computer programming. When he graduated with a BA, he had three different big computer companies offering a job. He went to work at Univac, and after a year transferred to the Univac site in Houston at the Manned Spacecraft Center.
When he returned to California, he took an MS Cybernetics degree program at San Jose State College, and worked for 35 years as a systems engineer for pioneering companies in Silicon Valley, including Ampex, Daisy Systems, HP, and SAP. While working over the years, he traveled to Mexico, Canada, the British Isles, Spain, Morocco, and India.
The poetry wrote itself throughout those years. They do not have a strong relationship to the logic he worked with every day – more like an escape from that logic to explore the landscape of the mind.
