Charles Ray Willeford wurde 1919 in Little Rock, Arkansas, geboren. Als Vollwaise wuchs er bei seiner Großmutter auf, bis die Depression das Überleben nahezu unmöglich machte und er sich den Tausenden von »Road Kids” anschließen musste, die im Südwesten der USA von einem Obdachlosencamp zum anderen trampten. 1935 schummelte er bei der Altersangabe und heuerte bei der US-Army an, wo er es bis zum mehrfach ausgezeichneten Panzerkommandanten brachte. Nach dem Militärdienst begann er zu schreiben und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Pulp Originals. Der endgültige Durchbruch gelang ihm in den späten Achtzigern mit der Tetralogie um Hoke Moseley. Charles Willeford verstarb im März 1988.
