Waguih Ghali, zwischen 1927 und 1929 in Kairo geboren, studierte in Alexandria, Kairo und Paris Medizin, allerdings ohne Abschluss, und lebte später in Schweden und Deutschland, wo er verschiedenen Berufen nachging. Nachdem er schon Mitte der 50er-Jahre in London gelebt hatte, kehrte er 1966 wieder dorthin zurück. 1964 war bei André Deutsch in London sein Roman „Beer in the Snooker Club“ erschienen. 1969 nahm sich Ghali mit Schlaftabletten in der Wohnung seiner Lektorin und Freundin Diana Athill das Leben. Seine Tagebücher sind posthum erschienen.
