Edward Frederic Benson (1867–1940), commonly referred to as E. F. Benson, was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist, and short story writer, known for his wit and a prolific output of works. Born in Wellington College, Berkshire, he was the son of Edward White Benson, the Archbishop of Canterbury, and brother to A. C. Benson and R. H. Benson, both of whom also had distinguished writing careers. E. F. Benson studied at Marlborough and King’s College, Cambridge, where he excelled at classics and was a part of the university’s archaeological expeditions to Greece. Benson’s literary style combined satire, humor, and acute character observations. His bibliography encompasses a variety of genres including social satires, supernatural horror, and historical fiction. However, he is best remembered for his ‘Mapp and Lucia’ series, a collection of comedic novels about social rivalries in the fictitious British towns of Tilling and Riseholme.
