Durante una excursión a pie, que realicé el pasado verano a través de uno o dos de los condados ribereños de Nueva York, me encontré, al caer el día, un tanto desorientado acerca del camino que debía seguir. La tierra se ondulaba de un modo considerable y durante la última hora mi senda había dado vueltas y más vueltas de aquí para allá, tan confusamente en su esfuerzo por mantenerse dentro de los valles, que no tardé mucho en ignorar en qué dirección quedaba la bonita aldea de B…, donde había decidido pernoctar. El sol casi no había brillado durante el día —en el más estricto sentido de la palabra—, a pesar de lo cual había estado desagradablemente caluroso. Una niebla humeante, parecida a la del verano indio, envolvía todas las cosas y, desde luego, contribuía a mi incertidumbre. During a pedestrian trip last summer, through one or two of the river counties of New York, I found myself, as the day declined, somewhat embarrassed about the road I was pursuing. The land undulated very remarkably; and my path, for the last hour, had wound about and about so confusedly, in its effort to keep in the valleys, that I no longer knew in what direction lay the sweet village of B—, where I had determined to stop for the night. The sun had scarcely shone—strictly speaking—during the day, which nevertheless, had been unpleasantly warm. A smoky mist, resembling that of the Indian summer, enveloped all things, and of course, added to my uncertainty.
