In Edgar Rice Burroughs’ fifth Tarzan novel “Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, ” Tarzan journeys to the gold-rich land of Opar, a lost colony of Atlantis the location of which is known only to Tarzan, in order to remedy a personal financial downturn. While there he must fend of the romantic advances of the high priestess La, and the intrigues of Albert Werper, a greedy Belgian criminal. Suffering amnesia after being struck on the head, Jane’s life is put in serious jeopardy when she is kidnapped by the Arab boss of Werper. Will Tarzan recover to rescue her in time?

American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875 – 1950) worked many odd jobs before professionally writing. Burroughs did not start writing until he was in his late 30s while working at a pencil-sharpener wholesaler. But after following his call to writing, Burroughs created one of America’s most enduring adventure heroes: Tarzan. Along with his novels about Tarzan, Burroughs wrote the notable Barsoom series, which follows the Mars adventurer John Carter.
