First published in 1848, it was translated in English by Constance Garnett (1861–1946) in 1918.

One night, he encounters a girl, alone as him, named Nastenka…



The novella has been adapted for the screen numerous times, including the 2008 movie “Two Lovers”, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
