The Confederate general’s 1879 account of secession (which he opposed), war, and reconstruction has been lauded as one of the most literary memoirs to come out of the Civil War. It has also been praised for its honesty, and for its assessment of figures such as Jefferson Davis, Andrew Johnson, and Ulysses S. Grant.
