At the time, communications director for First Lady Melania Trump, Grisham, sympathized with her boss and suggested they both go for a walk on the beach. She hoped to “comfort her as a friend, ” Grisham writes, to “hang out woman to woman, ” to give Melania a chance to relieve herself.
“And will there be photographers? asked the first lady. Melania, Grisham realized, assumed this was just another press event from her assistant. She didn’t acknowledge the opening of friendship or did not recognize it at all. “I felt like an ass to have offered, ” Grisham admits.
