Captain Frederick Marryat (1792–1848) was a distinguished British Royal Navy officer, a pioneer of the sea story genre, and a notable novelist of the 19th century. He rose to the rank of captain, participating in the Napoleonic and Anglo-American wars, accruing experiences that would later enrich his literary works.
