Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821–1881) served time in a penal colony for socialist activities, then developed a deep Russian Orthodox faith. That faith influenced his most important works, including Crime and Punishment (1866), a tale of violent sin and redemption; The Idiot (1868); The Possessed (1872); and The Brothers Karamazov (1880).
