Hanan Al-Shaykh nasceu em 1945 em Beirute, Líbano. Iniciou sua carreira como escritora aos 17 anos, no jornal Annahar. Em 1975, com o início da guerra civil libanesa, Al-Shaykh mudou-se para a Arábia Saudita e, em 1982, para Londres, onde vive até hoje. É considerada uma das maiores escritoras árabes contemporâneas. Tem mais de 15 livros publicados, entre contos e romances, e foi traduzida para mais de 20 idiomas.
