Ian Gough es profesor de investigación en el Centro para el Análisis de la Exclusión Social de la London School of Economics. Estudió economía en Cambridge a principios de la década de 1960 y, desde entonces, ha trabajado en el campo de la política social, aplicando la economía, la economía política, la ciencia política y la filosofía política a algunas de las preocupaciones centrales del estado del bienestar. Fue profesor de economía política y política social en la Universidad de Manchester.
Actualmente lleva adelante un proyecto de investigación focalizado en la intersección de la política de mitigación del cambio climático y la política social.
