Der Pfadfinder James Fenimore Cooper – Charles Cap ist zusammen mit seiner Nichte Mabel Dunham auf dem Weg ins Fort Oswego, wo Mabels Vater als Sergeant arbeitet. Sie werden von dem indianischen Scout Arrowhead und seiner Frau June begleitet. Im Wald trifft die Gruppe auf den Waldläufer Natty Bumppo, genannt Pfadfinder, den Mohikaner Chingachgook und den Binnenkapitän Jasper Western James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) war ein amerikanischer Schriftsteller der Romantik. Cooper ist in vielerlei Hinsicht eine Schlüsselfigur der amerikanischen Literatur. Er blieb bis weit in das 20. Jahrhundert hinein auch in Europa der wohl meistgelesene.

James Fenimore Cooper was a popular and prolific American writer. He is best known for his historical novel The Last of the Mohicans, one of the Leatherstocking Tales stories, and he also wrote political fiction, maritime fiction, travelogues, and essays on the American politics of the time. His daughter Susan Fenimore Cooper was also a writer.
